A Conservative's Case for Impeachment

Most people don't know it, but there is a 60-year-old man out in the cold right now walking toward Washington DC, who says Bush and Cheney need to be impeached in order to save the Constitution. He says he doesn't like hiking, and he doesn't like cold, but that someone had to do something. He has dipped deep into his retirement savings for the project, so much that he's not sure what he's going to do about retirement now. But he's convinced that if Bush and Cheney are not called to account for breaking the law and violating the Constitution, right now, the country will never be the same. People are walking alongside, waving, and wishing well as he goes.

His name is John Nirenberg, a college professor from Vermont. He may be liberal, but I'm not, so I've drawn up my own little list of "Why They Should be Impeached" so we conservatives can be counted too.

Right Eric,

This corruption is certainly not limited to the White House, the Congress is equally complicit in both parties and we've got to clean up even down to the local level. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid need to go. What this country needs is real representatives, not career politicians!

the U.S.S.R. used to listen in on its citizens' private phone calls in the name of national security.

I guess a country can't do things like that without failing.

i have wondered why more conservatvies haven't learned that impeaching bush is good for them and that is one of many reasons nancy says impeachment is off the table..
who the heck would want to run against a republican candidate that can say he voted for impeachment..
I mean is there any way besides switching parties to more distance yourself from a well hated president?
It makes you look strong and that is good for people that want to be leaders..
right now dems are winning votes, as bush is in office
right now dems have raised ten times more than republians and when you realize they never raise more than gop, this is amazing and all due to bush.
most of the hated ones in congress have left or announced they wont run again.
Its sorta liek showing your tough on torture by busting some lowly grunt like england... teh gop needs a fall guy and who better than bush.
It really doesnt even matter if it is successsful, just get your vote on record.

HINT HINT gop'rs
if the dem leadership dont want it.. then it must be good for you

Nice to hear from a "small government" Republican. Despite the rhetoric, there don't seem to be many left.

This article's headline is a misnomer. There is no "liberal" or "conservative" case for impeachment, only an American, Constitutional case. Upholding the Constitution does not fall at one end of the political spectrum. Those who would seek to justify Bush's crimes and atrocities are not "conservative" or "patriotic". They are at best, ignorant; at worst, fascist.

This is perfectly wonderful New Years story hamid, thank you. The truth is there are patriots in every corner of America wh have had more than enough and the media doesn't cover that truth any better than the coffins. Its as if they think they can hide it and maybe no one will know, but we do know. We are beynd tired we are angry for the overcharging and the %$#@ service. Close the account, I want a new option for my money thank you. The Internet is the equalizer and the criminal core is on its way out because you can't lie and steal and kill forever and not have people demand an end to it.

What a super inspirational trek. I think we should follow the guys route, Newsvine tracker and try to grab some pictures or interviews as he walks. Heck NYC is between Vermont and DC. I'll support the trek all the way to Congress by going out for a chat along the route. We'd have real news, the candidates are all in Iowa getting bigger campaign budgets and they all want to change, to protect us and to get the ads right for the Nomination.

Isn't that the way of the world? You have people who are acting as your friends, and you don't even know it. Might even call them a nut. Nirenberg plans on marching into DC around January 12, with a stack of letters and signatures for Nancy Pelosi telling her to put impeachment back on the table. If you want to know where he'll be on any given day until then, go to www.MarchInMyName.org

I am clipping this to my column hamid. Happy New Year Fellow Patriots, let's have ourselves a tea party!!

Yeah Pamels,

Nirenberg is a patriot, sacrificing much to draw attention to the madness. That's a great idea, if one of our Newsvine cohorts is near his trek, it would be citizen journalism at it's best...

Eric:

If I may, I have some question concerning your original comment here.

Exactly what makes the people you mentioned thugs?

Is it an American jurist's job to uphold international laws? That flies in the face of the Constitution being "the supreme law of the land," as it is supposed to be -- BY LAW.

How did our elected officials act in violation of the Constitution?

And what do you mean by "real social wealth"? That sounds suspiciously like "wealth redistribution," which is usually an euphemism for communism or socialism?

I call myself an Eisenhower-Roosevelt Republican. Eisenhower warned us of the threat to our freedoms of the "Military-Industrial Complex."

Ike was a Republican and warned about M.I.C. long before it was popular. Roosevelt was a Democrat and took us through WWII and built the roads and put everyone to work. If only we can find someone with both qualities to lead us to greatness again...sigh...

Good luck to this gentleman and his quest!

John Nirenberg is a fool whose futile efforts will fall into the abyss of forgotten history and forever remain unnoticed by the majority of the American people. No one cares whether Don Bush and his mafia are impeached because they are outta here this year. The professor gets an "A" for effort and an "F," well, for failure or frostbite.

Maybe he will reach notoriety on Letterman's stupid human tricks segment.

Because he failed to secure 360 TONS of HMX high explosives in Iraq back in 2004. He knew exactly where they were. These are killing our soldiers now.

Bush should be impeached for not securing explosives? Sounds like a job for soldiers on the ground.

Pretty good article though, although I don't think that Bush should be impeached; he's been a pretty good President.

    Rob,

#1. Laura Bush is not a murderer.

#2. Making a poor choice in spouse -- which the President did not do, mind you -- does not quite rise to the level of impeachment. It is not a "high crime" nor a "misdemeanor" related to his performance as chief executive. I kindly refer you to the Constitution (Article II, Section 4) on this one.
