Don't let the media decide your vote for you

Interesting video about how ABC deleted their poll when they discovered that Dennis Kucinich won the debate. The media wants to elect your next President?

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

A revealing look at the current state of media bias.

I agree hamid, we should not let the media affect how we vote. Unfortunately the media coverage has a huge impact on how Americans think. If the media isn't ignoring candidates altogether, they can latch onto irrelevant and damaging stories about that candidate. I hope that the internet opens people up to more information and allows people greater access, letting them make more informed decisions about who they are voting for. So far, the internet has not had the kind of impact I would have liked to see, but there is still great potential.

You're right about that NowhereMan7, the net is the only place I feel I can get information these days. As I watch the News on TV, I think to myself: "Yeah, But what is it that they're not reporting?" Sometimes what they don't report on is more important than what they do cover.

We should also always be aware of media ownership, and how that may skew what is presented in our media and how it is being presented.

Who stands to benefit from the viewpoint being presented? Are there other viewpoints that are not being given coverage? If so, why? If other viewpoints are represented, are they truly representative of the opposing viewpoints (or are they a false presentation)?

Are the sources generic? "A government official said..." Is there a legitimate reason they aren't naming names? etc.

I learned from an early age to "Question Authority". Don't accept things at face value without checking into things a little deeper.

These days Aine, we are accused of being unpatriotic for questioning the government. The American people have forgotten how to be responsible citizens, I'll stick with the advice of a true patriot:

Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.

Thomas Jefferson

Aine,

Isn't it timely as well, given the grip of fear this country is in. People are never more suggestible than when they are fearful.

Excellent points, Áine and Hamid.

I've got one advantage in that arena: I'm a disabled vet. So if they want to go that route, then my sharp claws and teeth come out. Hehehe.

Thanks JayMack. I think if we didn't pay any attention to mainstream media, we'd have a much more efficient democracy.
